  • The club organized the Alekhine Memorial International Chess Tournament in 1979. In 1986 they organized the Tata Steel GM Tournament as a 14 player Round Robin where all the players including Anand and other Indian players were put up at Grand Hotel despite urgings from other organizers, not to put up Indians in Five-Star Hotels. Thereafter the club organized the same meet in 1988 and then organized the Goodricke International Open Chess Tournament for 13 years from 1990 to 2002.

  • The club also organizes other tournaments ranging from strong national level rating tournaments to local weekenders. The Master's Championships, like Kolkata Open Chess, is the strongest tournament after the Goodricke Open in Kolkata..

  • The club also organized the Tata-Steel Grandmaster Chess Tournaments, The Telegraph International Youth Chess Tournament and many other National level tournaments at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata. After Goodricke Open, the club also started organizing Kolkata Open Gransmaster Chess Tournamentfor 5 years and it is expected that the same would be hosted soon at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata. Several chess players from West Bengal as well as from our country came intoprominence from the Masters events organized by the club at Gorky Sadan.

  • Another yearly event of the club has been sponsored by the daily media The Telegraph, is also very popular in the name of The Telegraph Schools Chess Championship. This event is recognised by the All India Chess Federation as the only rated chess tournament for school children in the country. Before the final round in Kolkata, the event is usually organized by the club at Bhubaneswar, Tata Steel in Jamshedpur and in Guwahati. The last the The Telegraph Schools Chess Championship was organized in November 2011 at Gorky Sadan and 500+ schoolchess players participated in the meet and it was widely publicized by dailies and electronic media all over the country. GM Viswanathan Anand also came for the occasion and he gave a simultaneous to 30 prize winners, posed for pictures with the winners, signed autograph books of the participants and also gave several tips to the winners to develop their games.

  • The only Club in West Bengal which has been helping various schools to promote chess.

  • The only Club in India which has organized the maximum number of International events (more than 25 international events which is a record in Asia).

  • The only Club in India where over 250 grandmasters including World Champions have participated, which is a record in Asia.

  • The only Club in India which has organized the maximum number of simultaneous chess exhibition matches by renowned grandmasters.

  • The only Club which was honoured with the presence of maximum number of celebrities such as Mother Teresa, Satyajit Ray, Vishwanathan Anand, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, B.S. Bedi, Ajit Wadekar,Jawagal Srinath, Leslie Claudius, Baichung Bhutia,P.K.Banerjee, Gurbux Singh, Sailen Manna, Chuni Goswami, Laxman Singh, Naresh Kumar, Vece Paes and many others.

  • The only Club in West Bengal where prominent intellectuals like Late Satyajit Ray, Late Premendra Mitra, Late Chinmoy Chattopadhyay, Late Anil Chatterjee, Late Samaresh Bose, Late Subhash Mukhopadhyay and many others were closely associated with the Club.

  • The only Club to have conducted the maximum number of chess clinics by National and International chess experts.

  • The only Club which has been helping the visually challenged organizations in organizing various events and coaching programmes.

  • The only Club which has won several Quiz contests at State and National level.

  • The only Club which set up Goodricke National Chess Academy with active help and support from  Ms Mamata Banerjee, the then Hon. Sports Minister, Govt of India and the Academy produced several reputed players including GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, GM Sandeepan Chanda, GM Neelotpal Das, etc.
