3RD KOLKATA OPEN GRANDMASTER CHESS TOURNAMENT
DEDICATED TO

THE YEAR OF RUSSIA IN INDIA
MEDIA RELEASE AFTER ROUND 5
Grandmasters Nguyen Anh Dung of
Vietnam and Viktor Laznicka of the Czech Republic, the overnight leaders, took
no risks and quickly agreed to draw their game in 21 moves at the 3rd
Kolkata Open Grandmaster Chess Tournament being organised by Alekhine Chess Club
at Gorky Sadan.
Both these players remain on top
of the rankings along with Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh who joined
them with a fine victory over Super Grandmaster Smbat Lputian of Armenia. The
Bangladeshi managed to exploit the exposed king of his opponent in the endgame
to win in 39 moves of a Reti opening.
Local International Master
Saptarshi Roy caused the upset of the round. He won an exciting game against
Grandmaster Vladimir Dobrov of Russia. Saptarshi opted for the Queen’s Gambit
declined variation and won a few pawns, but his king was slightly exposed. He
however managed to wriggle out and eventually won the game with his extra
material.
Another local Arghyadip Das lost
his game against Grandmaster Alberto David of Luxembourg in a French defense
game. Even though Arghyadip had the advantage of the white pieces he lost tamely
and thereby dented his chances of achieving the GM norm.
Top seeded Krishnan Sasikiran
won another long game against International Master Sundararajan Kidambi.
Sasikiran played the Grunfeld defence to pocket the point after 62 moves.
There was an interesting tussle
between Grandmasters Koneru Humpy and Sandipan Chanda on the third board.
Sandipan had to play passively throughout but managed to get his counter attack
going in the endgame to force a draw by repetition.
Grandmaster Ghaem Maghami of
Iran also came back into contention after his slow start. He disposed of
International Master M.R.Venkatesh in an English opening.
Grandmaster Adly Ahmed the world
junior champion also bounced back with a victory over International Master Arun
Prasad of India.
