The Telegraph Schools Chess Championship

The 20th edition of The Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship will be held at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata between 2nd and 8th September 2008. The schedule and other details are available through the top menu of this web page. Recently, the first leg of this event  concluded at Jamshedpur where around 330 school children took part from the States of Jamshedpur and Bihar. The final leg in Kolkata will be participated by school children from different States of our country, top 5 players from Jamshedpur leg and some players from Bangladesh.  The event is recognised by FIDE, AICF and WBCA and it is the only FIDE Rating schools chess championship in India since 1998.

From the last 19 editions of this event organised by Alekhine Chess Club and sponsored by The Telegraph, a leading news daily of Eastern India, several young chess players came into prominence. Most of them were nurtured at Alekhine Chess Club and Goodricke National Chess Academy at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata.  To name a few : GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, GM Sandipan Chanda, GM Neelotpal Das, IM Shankar Roy, IM Saptarshi Roy, IM Arghyadip Das, IM Suvrajit Saha, IM Somak Palit, IM Saptarshi Roychowdhury, WGM Nisha Mohota,  WGM Mary Ann Gomes, WIM Saheli Dhar (Barua),WIM Saheli Nath and many others. Furthermore, several other Indian and Bangladeshi players were spotted at this event, prominent  amongst them being Grandmasters Abhijit Kunte,Tejas Bakre of India and Zia-ur Rahman and Reefat-bin-Sattar of Bangladesh. Besides in The Telegraph Youth event of 1992 young players such as Rustam Kasimdzanov, Mikhail Ulibin,Antoneata Stefanova participated. Kasimdzanov and Stefanova went onto become the Men's and Women's World Champions respectively.For this, this meet is well known as the Talent Spotting Event of our Country.
